Solitaire season is upon me
It's the Steam Winter Sale and two of my purchases are solitaire card games. If you didn't know, I'm a huge fan of Zachtronics Solitaire Collection, but having already achieved 100 wins in Fortune's Foundation, I've been on the lookout for something new.
Fortune's Foundation, Zach's solitaire masterpiece
A Solitaire Mystery
From the creator of the award-winning block-pushing puzzle game Baba is You, comes A Solitaire Mystery. This is a collection of over 20 unusual solitaire card games, some with somewhat standard rulesets, and others with "mysterious experimental takes" including time travel, plant harvesting, performing alchemy and defeating monsters.
A Solitaire Mystery: Time Travel
I've only played Time Travel so far and it was really hard, yet really good! I got my first win after 2.7 hours of playtime. A Solitaire Mystery also has a fantastic chiptune soundtrack which I hope to buy soon.
Occlude
Cosmic-horror card game Occlude, is the most beautiful solitaire game I've played. The presentation is top-notch, the music is a bit creepy, and the rules of the game are... unknown! That's right. Only by watching the set of four coins at the top of the play area can you start to figure out what the winning condition will be. It's cryptic stuff, and is core to the story about a man who did something very bad, something he deeply regretted. But he was given a way to fix it, to make it seem as though it never happened at all... with a simple deck of cards.
Occlude: The Coffin
This game is really intriguing. In my first hour, I solved the first three puzzles, but that's in story mode with unlimited undos. The real challenge is the classic mode, and I look forward to trying it!
Special shoutout
A really good, and free(!) collection of over 120 solitaire games is appropriately named Free Solitaire. I've tried the... ahem, not so safe for work version (hey, it's Christmas!) and the quality is very good! Recommended if you're penny-pinching this holiday.
